Bush

Keir wants to know why I voted for Bush.

I voted for Bush partly as a vote of confidence. He’s been a far better leader since the Sept. 11 attacks than anyone thought he could be. He has shown a lot of courage in pursuing what is right, rather than what is popular (both here and internationally). I want to see him finish the job in Iraq, and keep terrorists on the run.

I liked Bush’s coherent and sincere answer to the “How does your faith influence your policy decisions?” question in the third debate. Kerry had a much harder time with it. The same thing with the “strong women” question (about their wives and daughters); Bush talked about how much he loves his wife; Kerry made a joke about “marrying up” and then told a story about his mother.

I just wasn’t very impressed by John Kerry. (Not that I am likely to ever vote Democrat.) The Democrats had too much “Anyone But Bush,” and too little about why John Kerry would be better. I never got a clear idea of what Kerry was planning to do with Iraq, but I was pretty sure that he wouldn’t follow through with what Bush started there. The “Iraq is like Vietnam, Kerry was in Vietnam so let him handle Iraq” line didn’t sit well with me. They left a huge opening for the Republicans to hammer Kerry on his Senate record.

Finally, I thought it was foolish of the Democrats to keep picking at Bush’s Texas Air National Guard record, because it kept that really cute picture of Bush in his TANG uniform in the news. (I finally found a copy of it here.)
