Waiting

Today is a day of waiting and hope, as we are hoping to hear back from the company that MFH interviewed with last week. This period of unemployment has gone on almost as long as a pregnancy. Bah. Meanwhile, the proposal that I have been working on for weeks is due on Friday. It’s going to take a big, long push to finish that and get it out.

I’ve just finished reading The Allure of Hope, by Jan Meyers, a book that I heard about when I was on retreat a couple of months ago. It is about clinging to hope in a world full of disappointment. Basically, she says there are three ways to hope: bury it and just focus on surviving, try to fulfill it by your own efforts, or wait and trust in God. This reminded me a lot of Tired of Trying to Measure Up, by Jeff VanVonderen, another worthy book. VanVonderen looks at the search for self-worth, and describes three ways of going about it: giving up, trying harder to earn it, or resting in God’s acceptance. I would say that I try harder about 80% of the time, give up about 15% of the time, and rest about 5%.
