Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
I will not be seeing this movie. I’ve read the book many, many times, and my visualization of it is far too firmly established in my head for me to watch anyone else’s rendition without major cognitive convulsions. Whose bright idea was it to cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka? He’s far too young! Someone like Dick Clark would have been closer to the mark.
I won’t even read the editions of the book that were illustrated by Quentin Blake. Joseph Schindelman’s illustrations are of far better artistic quality, and are much more sensitive to the descriptions in the text. In comparison, Blake’s pictures look like he was drawing half-drunk.
The same thing with the Harriet the Spy movie: Rosie O’Donnell as Ole Golly?! No way! The role of Ole Golly requires someone much…..drier. Anjelica Huston might possibly have pulled it off.
If a story is good enough to make a movie out of it, why mess it up by unnecessarily changing it from what the fans know and love?
