Fun with Nails

My work-at-home desk was handed down to me by interns departing from the company. Overall, it’s a decent desk, if you don’t mind solid particle board construction. The problem is the drawers: pull one out more than four inches, the sides would fall outward and the bottom would fall out. Along with everything in it. It’s possible that’s I’m missing some small but important pieces of desk hardware, but to me it looks like it was designed that way. Relying on the drawer guides to hold the drawers together: bad idea. I think the person responsible should be punished by having to actually use such a desk; just as fashion designers should have to wear the clothes they design.

Anyway, yesterday was the drawer that broke the camel’s back, as I was digging through a pile of binders for some vital information. I drilled pilot holes through the drawer front into the sides, and put in short aluminum nails. Now the sides can’t fall off. Now the bottoms can’t fall out. I can yank the drawers open with confidence! They don’t fall apart–amazing!
