Making Knitting Needles
My first knitting needles were two broken Tinkertoy sticks. No wonder I am still making knitting needles from dowels and sticks. A quarter-inch dowel is the same diameter as a Size 10 knitting needle; a bamboo chopstick is about a Size 8. I need a longer pair of Size 10 needles for the sweater I am about to knit, so I am whipping up a pair.
Making them is simple: cut to length, make points on them, and sand. I had some quarter-inch hardwood dowel on hand, just enough to make two long needles. Being in a hurry, I used the pencil sharpener to rough in the points. Then I finished shaping them with my pocket knife, and sanded them with 240 grit sandpaper. Dust ‘em off, and they’re done. I don’t usually bother putting a knob or stop on the end.
The yarn for the sweater is from two out-of-style sweaters that I unravelled.
