(RPGs are role-playing games.) This is my explanation to MFH, who has tried to get me to play Final Fantasy and games like it:

1. I have to run around (in the game) and do lots of things that I don’t want to do or care to do.

2. I have to fight creatures that I can’t easily defeat.

I should add that I find the equipping, healing, and fighting parts tedious and disruptive to really getting into the game world.
