Poor Feminists

This made me laugh so loud that MFH, who has the day off, came to see what it was. Better yet, he brought some Hershey’s kisses with him. Serious oppression ensued.

A short excerpt from the link:

Beyond the capitalist motivations of creating a holiday that embraces the experience of *normal* straight couples, I think it is a perfect time to look at how abnormal (potentially filled with abuse, trauma, rape) relationships can be for women and people of other genders, sexualities and nationalities that hallmark didn’t make a card for.

Well, that’s what MFH and I are, a straight couple (though not exactly normal). Valentine’s Day here was more like Valentine’s Week: MFH has been doling out chocolate and Star Wars valentines on a daily basis. (I particularly like the one with the Emperor: “Together we can rule the galaxy!”) I used to passionately hate Valentine’s Day, but it’s not so bad now that I’m married.

The post is in response to this article, which has a sane and sensible criticism of The Vagina Monologues. Everything I’ve heard about this play pushes it straight into my “Ew, gross!” category. I also don’t understand how it is going to end violence against women.

Another quote–the part I was laughing at:

My question is how do we a) get more young women to recognize the importance of V-day and b) let people know that Valentine’s Day is just another way we are complicit in our own oppression?

I think what she is trying to ask here is “How can we get more women to be as outraged, bitter, and unhappy as we are?” It must be tiresome to have to constantly be on guard against oppression disguised as chocolate. Not that I am entirely uncaring about all the issues that feminists are raising on this day; I just don’t see how sacrificing my happiness, love, and joy (not to mention chocolate) is supposed to help. Why can’t the women who are able to be happy and content be so?
