Sew? I Knit!

Filed under: Pregnancy, Projects, Foofy, General — March 28, 2006 @ 12:54 pm

Sew? I Knit! is a group of knitters that are trying their hands at sewing. The next Sew-Along, for April, is to sew a bag of some sort. Sign-ups are open through this week; I just joined. The first Sew-Along was to sew a skirt; it’s interesting to see how everyone’s skirts turned out.

My bag is going to be what I am calling a “church purse” — kind of a glorified Bible cover to hold my Bible, pen, Hipster PDA, Kleenex, and so on. I am going to use some corduroy scraps from my fabric stash.

We also went to JoAnn Fabrics a while back and picked out fabric for a maternity dress. The fabric has a very small print, which is probably going to look absurdly out of scale on a large pregnant woman, but I liked the feel of it, and the price. The pattern is Simplicity 8589, which I think I can live with. This page gives some hints on adapting non-maternity patterns.

Last night I finished knitting a pair of socks that I began about five years ago. The next time I knit socks, I will work on them in parallel, rather than in series. The second sock ended up considerably narrower than the first one–I am finally learning how to hold and “throw” the yarn properly (with my fingers, not my fist), and it has affected my knitting tension. Both socks more or less fit, but one is clearly the runt of the pair.

The next project that I should finish before starting any new ones is to finish a baby sweater for my new nephew. I have a couple more rows to go on the edging, and then a lot of ends to work in, and so on.
