Smart Kitty
Sometimes I wonder how much English my cat understands.
Words and phrases that she definitely responds to: food, canned food, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, treat, hungry, kitty, hop down, watch out, no, come here.
Phrase that she knows, but pretends not to, for strategic reasons: dry food.
Words that she probably has figured out by now: Mom (me), Pop (MFH; I got her about a year before our marriage), porch, sauna, sink, head scratchies, sun, bite, toy, string.
Not bad for a brain the size of a walnut.
Today she was begging for attention and I asked her if she wanted to go with me (to the porch) to get the mail. She came downstairs with me and went straight to the front door. I guess she is remembering “get the mail” from a couple years ago, when I used to put her in her harness and “walk” her down the hallway to the building’s front entrance to get my mail. She didn’t like the harness much, but she liked being able to get out of the apartment and explore a little.
