Laundry Soap

The past couple of days have been very busy, with a lot of running around (well, walking around, actually), and no naps. I can tell that I need to Slow Down. So I’ll hold off on writing about why the feminist push to make Plan B pills available without a prescription to minors is a Very Bad Idea, and write about laundry soap instead.

I gave this homemade laundry soap recipe a try a while back, as we were running out of detergent. I used Zote soap in the recipe, because I happened to have an old block of it around, inherited from my mother. I didn’t have any trouble finding washing soda and borax at the grocery store. The prices were comparable to the ones the page uses in its cost calculations. The recipe only calls for a half cup of each, so they will last for quite a while. Making the laundry soap wasn’t too hard; the hardest part was finding two gallon’s worth of containers to put it in when it was done. I repurposed a hard-to-wash Rubbermaid container with a spout that we had rejected as a Kool-Aid pitcher, and it works well in its new role. The rest went into an empty ice-cream bucket.

The laundry soap came out with a rather gloppy texture, and slightly pink and scented from the Zote soap. But it seems to get the job done in the wash, at least by my (fairly low) laundry standards. MFH, who is the laundry expert in the house, hasn’t complained. The real test will be to see how well it works on cloth diapers.
