Six months

OLC is six months old now. She can’t really sit up on her own, but she is bound and determined to crawl. She’s able to get up on all fours, and rock back and forth, and earlier today she managed to lurch forward and land on her face. We are going to have to put some more effort into childproofing: she is fascinated by electrical cords. Plus she is very persistent, and works incredibly hard to master each new skill. I think we’re going to just have to anchor all the bookcases to the wall, if she’s the sort of climber her mother was (is). At changing time, she keeps trying to roll over and gnaw on the rail of the changing table. No teeth yet, but they are coming.

We’ve started trying some baby food with her. So far the only thing that she has liked is pears. Bananas and carrots got a very definite Do Not Want!! (MFH took pictures, of course.) I have a couple of Gerber employees in my extended family, who used their employee discounts and got us a whole bunch of baby food as a shower gift, so we are set. Otherwise, I would be using a little food mill or something.

With OLC’s six-month checkup came more shots. We are doing a subset of the recommended vaccinations. Being on the paper-covered exam table seemed to remind her of the last round of shots, and she started crying. But this time went better: both of us cried less, and she seemed more her normal self (last time she conked out for the rest of the day).

Our church nursery duty on Sunday went ok, largely because we had two teenagers helping us. They took the two one-year-olds, I took OLC, and when the two-month-old woke up, MFH put her in the sling and swayed her back to sleep for the rest of the time. It left me wondering how daycares make a 1:4 caretaker to infant ratio work. One of the one-year-olds was pretty clearly missing his parents. We’re still not planning on putting OLC in the nursery.

We’ve been pretty light on the spiritual food lately, two weeks away from church with just-sick-enough-to-be-contagious strep throat, and then one busy in the nursery.

In personality, OLC is still a little princess angel, smily and outgoing most of the time. She has quite the fan club, at church and elsewhere. At home, though, she’s pretty frustrated at not being able to crawl yet, so even if she’s on the floor, I can’t get much (paid) work done. On the other hand, she has adopted a pretty consistent bedtime, and will nurse to sleep while I read in bed, so I’ve gotten my main reading time back. Her favorite toy right now seems to be the cat–she just lights up when Kitty walks into the room.
