OLC had her 2nd birthday last weekend. Actually, I feel like she has been two for a while. I gave her a tin tea set, a la A Bargain for Frances, and MFH gave her black jelly beans, a la Hurray for Captain Jane.

She is now mostly weaned, although she doesn’t think she is. Breastfeeding in the first trimester was just a little painful for me, but the second trimester added the symptom of “agitation”, which apparently means “being overwhelmed by feelings of wanting to run away and never breastfeed again” at each and every feeding. So now every time she asks to nurse, I just tell her that I am too tired, which is the truth, and offer an alternative. Within just a few weeks, she’s gone from nursing about 10 times a day, and always nursing to sleep at home, to zero nursing and being able to just lie down and go to sleep. (I think reading Bedtime for Frances helped some.) Really remarkable. I’ve been thinking I might unwean her after the new baby comes, but we’ll see. I don’t feel at all that she is too old to nurse; in fact, I’m nervous about going through the winter sickness season without it.

Just now she has a ruler and a block, and she said, “I’m making a cheese!” as she tried to cut the block with the ruler. Then she ran the block along the ruler and said it was a train. Then it turned into cheese again.
