Today at church
People were asking how I was feeling, being so close to the due date. Most were surprised when I said that I felt pretty good, and that I wouldn’t mind being pregnant for a couple more weeks. The reason, really, is that at the moment I’m not sick, so I feel a lot better than I have for most of this pregnancy. For the past eight months, I’ve been catching a cold virus or random other bug almost every week. Sometimes I’ve gotten quite sick, other times just tired and draggy for a few days. I’ve been consoling myself by thinking that the baby is getting pre-stocked with antibodies, and will never get sick, because I have had it all this fall and winter.
But I suspect that this period of relative good health is not going to last. When I went to pick up OLC from her twos-and-threes “class” (they don’t do anything with the toddlers during the sermon except let them play; this bugs me a lot but I haven’t had the energy to do anything differently) she was munching on a plastic toy spoon. They have a full play kitchen in the room, with play utensils that all the little kids munch on and no one ever washes, as far as I know. I suspect at least half of the germs I’ve been getting come from there. I wash her hands afterward, but that doesn’t do much good when things have been going right in her mouth the whole time.
